About SAMLA

Founded in 1928, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association is an organization of teachers, scholars, and students dedicated to the advancement of literary and linguistic scholarship and teaching in the modern languages.

As its name implies, SAMLA started as a regional organization; however, current membership extends throughout the southeastern United States, across the country, and around the world. Its membership communicates through two primary venues: its annual conference and its publication, South Atlantic Review.

SAMLA established South Atlantic Review (originally titled South Atlantic Bulletin) in 1935 as its official publication. Over the years, SAR has published essays, review essays, and book reviews on a variety of literary, linguistic, and cultural topics.

SAMLA’s largest event is its annual conference. Comprised of an extensive list of panels, events, and distinguished speakers, each conference continues to draw people from throughout the region and, increasingly, the world.
